New Delhi: Instant messaging platform WhatsApp will end support for certain Blackberry and Windows Phone devices after December 31, 2017. What this basically means that smartphone users' with BlackBerry OS, Blackberry 10, WindowsPhone 8.0 will no longer be able to create new accounts or re-verify existing ones on these platforms starting with the new year.
While the application may continue to function, the Facebook-owned company warns users that some features may stop functioning on these platforms at any time. These operating systems do not offer the kind of capabilities required to expand the app's features in the future, WhatsApp said in a post.
For the following platforms, you can no longer create new accounts, nor re-verify existing accounts. However, you'll be able to continue using WhatsApp:

In addition to BlackBerry and Windows Phone device, WhatsApp has specifically stated that support for Nokia S40 devices will end by December 31, 2018, and for Android devices with version 2.3.7 until February 1, 2020.
"If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer OS version, or to a newer Android running OS 4.0+, iPhone running iOS 7+, or Windows Phone 8.1+ so that you can continue using WhatsApp," the company added.
WhatsApp has already ended support for Windows Phone 7; Android versions older than 2.3.3; iPhone 3GS/iOS 6, and Nokia Symbian S60 platforms.
Notably, there is currently no option to transfer chat history between platforms which means once upgrading to the newer platform you are likely to lose all the chat history. WhatsApp, however, provides the option to send chat history attached to an email.
